The Salem Montessori School
has built a 15-year
tradition of serving
children ages 6 weeks
through 5th grade using the
educational philosophy of
Dr. Maria Montessori. An
Italian physician and
pioneer in child
development, Dr. Montessori
developed a philosophy that
embraces the whole child
based on her observations
that children have a
natural, progressive
aptitude for
acquiring knowledge about
their world. She found that
by placing children in
specially prepared
environments to meet their
physical, cognitive, and
social needs children not only learn but
also thrive. |

The Montessori classroom is
conducted on the principles
of freedom within limits and
consideration for each other
and the environment.
Children work at their own
pace with materials they
choose, alone or with
others. Teachers move the
class forward in the
Montessori curriculum. Our
objective is to encourage
active, self-directed
learning and small group
collaboration. |
